  • Second hand smoke kills - find out how to get some breathing space.Open or Close

    Pollute Purify

Like a lot of people, you might think that other people’s tobacco smoke is simply a bit unpleasant. But it’s much worse than that. Second hand smoke is harmful to health.

It’s safest to be where people aren’t smoking at all. And that will become much easier from 1 July 2007, when virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England become smoke-free. Second hand smoke is a killer. It’s time to face the facts. The following pages give you the who, what, where, when and why of second-hand smoke.

    Who? YOU

Being in a smoky atmosphere immediately puts your body under pressure. Your eyes may become sore. You could start coughing. You may even feel sick. As well as these unpleasant symptoms is the more serious long-term damage that is being done to your vital organs.

Breathing in second-hand smoke is dangerous. Scientific evidence now clearly shows the link between second-hand smoke and many life threatening conditions:

Risk of lung cancer up by 24% Risk of heart disease up by 25%

(Source: Scientific Committee on Tobacco and Health)

Breathing in second-hand smoke can trigger asthma attacks and also increase your chances of developing breathing or other chest problems.

If children breathe in second-hand smoke their chance of getting asthma doubles. And if they already have asthma, it’s definitely making their breathing worse.

    WHAT WHERE

Second-hand smoke is not just breathed out by smokers. Most of it comes directly from the lit ends of cigarettes and cigars and because it’s unfiltered, is the most toxic sort.

The toxic substances in second-hand smoke include over 69 cancer-causing chemicals. They’re the kind of thing you would never choose to inflict on anyone.

Chemicals in Second-hand smoke Tar – a mixture of dangerous chemicals. Arsenic – used in wood preservatives Benzene – an industrial solvent, refined from crude oil Cadmium – used in batteries Formaldehyde – used in mortuaries and paint manufacturing Chromium – used to manufacture dye, paints and alloys Butadiene – used in rubber manufacturing Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons – a group of dangerous DNA-damaging chemicals Acrolein – formerly used as a chemical weapon

    TIME WHEN

Second-hand tobacco smoke can really hang around. The best thing to do is to make your home completely smoke free.

Young children are particularly vulnerable to second hand smoke because their bodies are still developing. They can get breathing problems, middle ear infections and asthma attacks. And they are more likely to have to go to hospital in their first year of life.

Pregnant women exposed to second hand smoke can pass on the harmful chemicals to their babies.

    Reaction Recovery

If you’re a smoker, the best way to protect your friends and family from the harm caused by second hand smoke is to go smoke free completely. Everyone benefits – most of all, you.

Not only will you feel healthier and breathe more easily, but you’ll avoid the serious diseases associated with smoking. Your life gets so much better when you go smoke free:

Cut your chances of getting heart disease Decrease your chances of getting lung cancer Have more energy for sudden exertions Save cash Look better and feel better

20 Minutes – your blood pressure and pulse return to normal. Circulation improves – especially in your hands and feet.

8 Hours – your blood oxygen levels return to normal and your chance of having a heart attack falls.

24 Hours – carbon monoxide leaves your body. Your lungs start to clear out mucus and debris.

48 Hours – Congratulations. Your body is now nicotine free. And have you noticed how your senses of taste and smell have improved?

72 Hours – your breathing is easier. You have more energy.

2-12 Weeks – circulation is now improved throughout your body. It’s easier for you to walk and exercise now.

3-9 Months – your lung efficiency is up by 5-10 per cent. Breathing problems are fading away. Say goodbye to coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing.

5 Years – you now have only half the chance of getting a heart attack compared to a smoker.

10 Years – the chances of you getting a lung cancer is now half that of a smoker. Your chances of having a heart attack are now the same as someone who’s never smoked.

  • Facebook addiction disorder (fad)Open or Close

FAD, or Face book Addiction Disorder, is a condition that is defined by hours spent on Face book, so much time in fact that the healthy balance of the individual’s life is affected. It has been said that approximately 350 million people are suffering from the disorder.

Face book perhaps has become new age potentially toxic, addicting non medical drug in teenager, adolescents and adults...thanks to the meteoric technological advancements in internet accessibility and user friendly applications. Remaining untouched with this new face book bug for young e-generations teens looks almost impossible.

In the beginning the child or parents will not recognize how quickly simple FB curiosity will slip into habit disorder and finally into addiction. In the beginning teenagers are tempted into FB for peeping into friends profile, having endless meaningless chit chat, They feel they are in trend, as teen not having FB account seems to be an orthodox old fashioned character.

Suspect FB addiction in your child if:-

He loses sleep over Face book…" He stays up late at night because he is on Face book, and is tired the next day, Face book may be a compulsion for him to the extent that he is neglecting himself because of Face book." He spends more than an hour a day on Face book…Probably no one needs more than 30 minutes. He is becoming obsessed with old loves...Reconnecting with old friends is one of the great attractions of Face book, and there's nothing necessarily wrong with connecting with an old boyfriend or girlfriend. But it can get out of hand very quickly especially in teenagers. He ignores work and studies in favor of Face book...”If he is not doing studies in order to sneak time on Face book; he is having a real problem. The thought of getting off Face book leaves him in a cold sweat. Slipping school grades...that’s really worrisome.

As the intensity of face book addiction increases, child loses his creativity and socialising skills. There is disruption of family bond along with that lack of physical exercises makes you thick skinned couch potato.

Eventually .FB addiction surely affects cognitive and psycho social facets of brain leading to poor interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship. Expecting quick (as quick as internet search engine) fix solutions for problems in and out of home which if not met leads to depression and frustrations.

Parents should always be on the lookout for some red flags related to face book addiction like :Poor or lack of eye to eye contact while talking to your child,  teen prefers to remain alone , stays awake late night ,  not interested in outdoors or meeting friends or relatives in person , gives unrelated answers to questions.

To curb this nasty addiction parents should ensure:Teens really do not need Wi fi, have him surf FB for limited time (less than 30 minutes) in presence of everyone in house...never alone...Engage teens into more of book reading habits and outdoor play.

  • Tips for managing a toddler who does not eat well (picky eater)Open or Close

    What is normal?

Reduced food intake or not having expected increase in food is a normal behavior in second year of life. There will be certain periods of reduced food intake at all – don’t worry, baby will take the next diet or resume normal eating pattern in the next few days. His likes and dislikes develop during this age; they should be respected.

So, being picky about food is a normal behavior in a toddler, don’t worry about it. Eating pattern developed during the first two years of life usually persists for several years, so it is important to establish good eating habits.

    What food to offer?

Daily select one food item each group: grain, pulses, fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products. 3 meals 2 -3 snacks are sufficient. Food should be tasty and attractive in appearance. Offer a variety of dishes with various tastes. Let the child select what he likes. Make a list of foods that your child likes, so that it is easy to decide what to give at a time – will avoid lot of confusion and distress to the mother. Let the child decide how much to eat from each item or from entire food served. Offer nutrient rich and calorie rich foods Juices up to 120ml and milk up to 700ml will be the maximum that can be offered a day. Don’t give soda or similar beverages like cola. Simply offer healthy and tasty choices throughout the day and trust that he will get what he needs.

How to offer a new food?

Offer it along with the food he likes, so that if he doesn’t like the new food he can take the other food. Don’t force him to take the new food. Offer the new food again several days or weeks later, even if he doesn’t like it at first time. New food has to be offered several times up to 10-15 times before taking the decisions that he does not like that food.

How to establish healthy habits of eating in a toddler:

You yourself should set a good example by eating variety of healthy foods. If you are fussy with foods, eating junk foods and colas, your child may also follow that. Establish a routine: regular meal time, same seat at the table etc. Proper chair with a foot rest is good. Serve food with other family members. Talk about something interesting and pleasant at meal time. It should not be the time for arguments. Even if he doesn’t eat, make him stay at the table till most of the family members complete their food. Make meal time the occasion for eating and spending quality time with family. Don’t expect much manners from the child. Meal time should never end up in a time for war with child and distress for parent or child. This is a common problem in toddler eating so anticipate it and avoid it. Even if you are distressed, don’t show it before the child. Don’t let the child play with toys during meal time. Viewing T.V. or reading books during meal time should be discouraged. Involving the child in the preparation of food and arranging will increase his interest in food. If the child doesn’t eat at meal time, offer next snack few hours later. If the child doesn’t want to eat, accept his or her refusal.

Some don’ts in feeding a toddler:

Don’t try to force feed, because poor food intake is temporary; attempts to force feed may be futile, may result in more severe feeding problem, child may rebel. Feeding difficulties frequently result from excessive insistence on eating and subsequent anxiety of the parent. Preventing problems is easier and more effective than correcting them. Don’t try to compare: How much a child eats may be different from another child. Don’t bribe the child to eat (eg. Offer to buy a toy as reward) Threats and punishments for feeding should be avoided. Don’t show the child that you are upset by the refusal to eat – child may exploit that. Don’t offer snacks to close to meal time, because if a child is hungry he is more likely to eat more. Stop the urge to make him eat ‘just little more’ because it may later make him more resistant to feeding.

How to make sure that a child who is picky eater is normal?

Chart his growth (weight and height) in a growth chart, if he remains on same centile graph the normal ranges over the months, he considered normal. Assess his development. Assess if he is active in play. Make sure he is free from fever and other If all the above are normal, you can be sure he is normal and is getting adequate nutrient.

Feeding involves responsibility of the mother and baby:

Mother’s responsibility: Decide what, where and when food is given.
Child’s responsibility: Decide whether to eat or not and how much to eat!

  • Universal children's day has been celebrated at Belhoul speciality on 19 of november 2009Open or Close

    Universal Children's Day

Children are one of the most beautiful gifts from God, and one cannot even imagine why people would be cruel or take away the laughter from such innocence. But the grim fact is that many countries were (and some still are) not attuned to the fact that children also have rights to grow into well adjusted and good human beings.

It is therefore that the UN General Assembly recommended that all countries should introduce this annual event, Universal Children's Day, from 1956 to promote the welfare of children. Therefore every year on the 20th of November children and minors are honored and celebrated.

Belhoul Speciality Hospital successfully celebrated the International children's day on 19th November 2009. Multiple fun filled activities like, face painting, drawing competitions, magic show kept the parents and children totally absorbed into the festive like atmosphere.

Children in the hospital were at their best, phobia free, in fact never wanted to leave the action arena i.e. - Atrium of our hospital waiting bay on ground floor. Magic show was on instant hit, kids and parents were absolutely mesmerized by the clown & the magician. They did excellent face painting also. About 100 kids with their families thoroughly enjoyed the day.

The Take home message for all participants was Department of Paediatrics at Belhoul Speciality Hospital takes care of children and their parents even when they are not sick. We plan more of such fun filled, health awareness activities in future.
